My Dad was to say to me on more than one occasion that, if I fell into a sewer, I would come out smelling of roses!  Having just completed this first part of the story of my life, I am now inclined to agree with him.  I have been extraordinarily fortunate to have travelled around the world, as both a sailor and an airman, whilst living through a period of amazing technological and social change, and, by telling my story, I hope that I have added a small piece to the jigsaw that future generations will have to assemble to fully understand the period of history through which I have lived.
